An extraordinary story of survival against the odds.

The story of Sirius begins with the 1970s Battle for The Rocks and a Green Ban, which saved an historic precinct and a community. The Green Ban held for four years during which there was no building activity until everyone agreed to build Sirius. Tao Gofers, the architect of Sirius, explains how this agreement was reached and how he designed a vertical village perhaps the last, and arguably the most successful, tower built for public housing in this era.

Sirius was launched by Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore, at Books Kinokuniya on Wednesday 8th November 2017.

Jack Mundey Tea Towel

50 x 70cm 50% Linen, 50% Cotton Tea Towel

Jack Mundey, former leader of the Builders Labourers Federation, has been a champion of protecting heritage throughout Sydney since the 1970’s. With over 40 Green Bans placed on significant environmental and heritage area’s, we have been able to protect the history of Sydney – including the Sirius Building.

Here Jack is pictured as the ‘Jack of Activists’ – a young Jack in the 1970’s as the leader of the BLF, and Jack in the 1980’s as part of the Historic Houses Trust. This tea towel was originally designed by Meredith Walker and released in the 1980’s to commemorate Jack Mundey, but we are now re-releasing it to commemorate the Save Our Sirius campaign.
